DESCRIPTION OF INTERESTS
Microbial toxins Enteric infectious diseases Enteropathogenic E. coli Cellular mechanisms of diarrhea
My research is on the pathogenesis of diarrhea due to enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) and enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC). ETEC and EPEC are important causes of diarrhea among children in developing countries. Regarding ETEC, my research has focussed on the mechanism of action of the heat-stable enterotoxin, STa, which acts by stimulating membrane-bound guanylyl cyclase in intestinal cells, generating cyclic GMP.
My laboratory‘s interest in EPEC has focussed on the activation of protein kinase pathways within the host cell, and on the ability of EPEC to trigger death of the host cell. We have recently shown that EPEC-induced cell death shows features of apoptosis, or programmed cell death. |
