DESCRIPTION OF INTERESTS

The goal of Dr. Rabin’s laboratory is to determine the mechanism of action of drugs of abuse at the cellular and molecular levels with a focus on hallucinogens, such as LSD, and alcohol. The research involves investigating the effects of these compounds on neurotransmitter receptors and their signal-transducing pathways as well as the adaptive changes that occur after drug exposure especially during development. Studies make use of animal models as well as primary CNS cultures and clonal cell lines.

Current studies:
In collaboration with Dr. Jerrold C. Winter, an integration of behavioral and biochemical approaches are being used to elucidate the roles of the different serotonergic receptor subtypes and glutamatergic neurotransmission in the subjective effects of hallucinogens.

Proteomic analysis involving two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and mass spectrometry as well as the two-dimensional fluorescence difference gel electrophoretic (2-D DIGE) system are being used to determine the molecular mechanisms controlling sensitivity to the acute effects of ethanol and the adverse effects of chronic ethanol exposure

In collaboration with Dr Cynthia Dlugos, morphologic, biochemical, and genetic approaches are being used to determine the molecular mechanisms responsible for the adverse effects of fetal alcohol exposure on the development of the eye.
