DESCRIPTION OF INTERESTS
Nosocomial infections Quality improvement Information management Bioterrorism preparation
Nosocomial infections remain one of the most costly and tragic consequences of medical care in the United States. Efforts to treat these infections have yielded less than ideal results and have spawned multi-resistant pathogens and other opportunists. The increasing numbers of highly immunocompromised hosts has magnified this problem. Our efforts have been based on the epidemiologic paradigm of hypothesis development, data collection and critical interpretation of the data. This has been done in the traditional pursuits of infection control, surveillance and prevention, but we now are attempting to improve our methods by accounting for the underlying severity of patients‘ illness. These studies naturally have led into the broad area of continuous quality improvement, where epidemiologic rigors play an important role. Similarly, the complexity of medical care has generated new problems of self-protection for healthcare workers. The use of the epidemiologic paradigm has allowed for thoughtful evaluation of programs rather than emotional responses which may be counterproductive. There is little doubt that these areas of endeavor will grow and demand our attention. |
